Google Security and Privacy Warnings Coming October 2017

At MOXIE DESIGN CO., we’re all about protecting your peeps. That’s why we wanted to give you this important heads up regarding the privacy of your website.

In an effort to increase cyber security for website users, Google is releasing Chrome version 62 in less than a month (October 2017). Websites with text input forms or search bars will require an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate to avoid a “Not Secure” warning in the address bar. Websites that accept credit cards or have password fields are already getting blacklisted by Google if they don’t have an SSL certificate.

An SSL establishes an encrypted link between your web server and your visitor’s web browser to ensure that all data exchanged between them remains private and secure. Without a secure connection, third-parties can spy on your web traffic, which can be a huge security threat if you’re gathering sensitive information like credit card numbers, identity info, etc. To ramp up security, Google is pushing HTTPS connections. What’s more, not having an SSL will also have a negative effect on your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) rankings.

You can tell if a website is secure by looking at the protocol at the beginning of the url. If it reads HTTP, the site does not have an SSL and is not secure. If it reads HTTPS, the site does have and SSL, and visitor information is secure in transit.

Is your website using HTTP:// in the address bar? If so, visitors can expect to start seeing privacy notification messages when they visit your site… which may deter them. But don’t fret! MOXIE DESIGN CO. can help. We can install an SSL to keep your customers safe and happy while on your site, and we promise it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
